Items from Ikea used:

Ikea Mosslanda picture ledge (you can also use other ikea picture ledges like Marietorp or Knoppang)

I wanted to install a picture ledge behind my sofa as I was a little bored of the usual hanging pictures and I wanted to be able to have a convenient place to put other decorative items and my AV remotes!

The length of my wall was approximately 207 cm and each picture ledge is either 115 cm (long) or 55 cm (short). Therefore I went out and purchased 2 long Mosslanda picture ledges and trimmed 23 cm off one of them using a regular saw. I also sanded off any rough edges and then painted the cut area with white paint to make it look like it came that way.

I added one more hole near the end of the cut section to make sure the entire length is still well supported.

Adding another hole for support screw

For the longer uncut ledge, I routed a small channel to allow the wire from an Ikea Tertial lamp to go through. I was careful to make sure it would be big enough for the cable to move freely within and through this hole. I was too lazy to whip out the router (not to mention the noise it would have made) so I used a drill with a large wooden drill bit to do the job. I may plan to move the switch to somewhere below the ledge to make it look even more stealth. And yes – that Ikea Tertial lamp was spray painted black and gold making a great reading light.

Another challenge would be to perfectly join / align the 2 pieces on the wall during install to make it look like one long seamless continuous piece by just using the provided screws. To join the 2 pieces together I used a piece of relatively thing but rigid MDF board (cut to size : approximately 40 cm x 10 cm) to join the 2 pieces together in perfect alignment prior to install making sure that it was not visible.

After that I used a level to make sure the entire 207 cm was perfectly level before making and drilling the necessary 6 holes to securely fasten the entire thing to the wall. Make sure you get someone to help with longer lengths so the MDF doesn’t snap as your carry it to the correct height.

Filling in the gaps

After the entire thing was secured to the wall, I used some Shelley’s gap filler (white) and made sure all the gaps along the wall , the joint between the 2 pieces etc are completely sealed so it looks relatively seamless.

There you go – not a major hack by any means but a little effort goes a long way to making something as simple as a Ikea ledge fit perfectly and look great on your wall!
