BESTÅ Hidden Office/ Dining Bench

IKEA items used:

– BEKANT desk, BESTA cabinet frames in these sizes:

  • 47 1/4 x 7 7/8 x 25 1/4 ” – Two
  • 23 5/8 x 7 7/8 x 25 1/4 ” – Two
  • 47 1/4 x 15 3/4 x 15 ” – One

I’ve intentionally left a space for my old dining bench. You can get an extra 23 5/8 x 15 3/4 x 15 ” frame to fill this space.

– Doors

– Wheels – I put mine on wheels just in case we spill something, and needed clean up under the cabinets. You can use the legs, you just need something to get it elevated so the desk legs can slide underneath.

– Other materials: wall mount monitor arms, flat metal brackets, wood screws, 4 furniture sliders.

Living in a small space, and having to find a place to fit in an office, I came up with this idea to hide the monitors inside the BESTA cabinets, and also use the cabinets as a dining bench.

1) Attach wall mount monitor arms to 15-inch-high door panels.

2) Assemble the 47 1/4 x 7 7/8 x 25 1/4 ” cabinet frame without the back panel. Screw the prepared door panels to the back of the cabinet.

3) Assemble the other 47 1/4 x 7 7/8 x 25 1/4 ” cabinet frame, this time with the back panel. Stack the cabinet with the monitor arm on top of this one. Attach wheels to the bottom cabinet. Set aside.

4) Assemble the 47 1/4 x 15 3/4 x 15 ” cabinet frame without the back panel. This will be used as the seat. Attach wheels. Push the frame against the other cabinet frame that was set aside in step 3. Attach metal brackets to keep the frames together. I don’t use the back panel on this one so I can access the extra storage space in the back.

5) Follow step 3 for the 23 5/8 x 7 7/8 x 25 1/4 ” cabinet frames. Attach to the side of the existing frame.

6) Attach doors. I use the flip-down drawer mount for the monitor cabinets.

7) Put furniture sliders under BEKANT desk’s legs. This makes it much easier to slide the desk around.

Now you can transform between office mode and dining mode.
